A 340-Acre Piece of American History - Jackie Kennedy’s Red Gate Farm Estate

With over a mile of private Atlantic Ocean beachfront and dunes, as well as a fairytale-themed treehouse Ms. Onassis built for her grandchildren, Red Gate Farm “was a perfect expression of her romantic and adventurous spirit,” Caroline Kennedy wrote in a statement about her mother’s purchase of the $1 million dollar property.
Jackie Kennedy purchased the Martha’s Vineyard sheep farm in 1979 and set about to make it her own, transforming it into a magnificent estate that would be treasured for three generations.
Although the Kennedy Compound was not far in Cape Cod, Jackie wanted to create a smaller, more private retreat for her family, surrounded by the Aquinnah landscape of sand dunes and rolling hills.
She commissioned architect Hugh Newell Jacobson to design the Cape Cod-style main house and the two-story guest house.
She also hired her friend Rachel (Bunny) Mellon to design the estate's landscape, after she had redesigned the White House Rose Garden while Kennedy was in office. The home was completed in 1981, although the property was further renovated and expanded in 2000 under the direction of Deborah Berke, Dean of the Yale School of Architecture.
The expansive estate includes a vegetable garden and blueberry patch, an outdoor pool, and tennis court, as well as hunting cabin, barn, and a boathouse.
