If You’ve Ever Dreamt of Living in a Gothic Tower, This is Your Chance!

If You’ve Ever Dreamt of Living in a Gothic Tower, This is Your Chance!

On the outside Hadlow Tower is pure gothic fantasy, on the inside it is a spectacular five-bedroom family home, with a rooftop terrace offering a 360-degree view of west Kent.

The 175-foot Hadlow Tower, also known as ‘May’s Folly’, is the largest Victorian Gothic tower in Britain, topped with a 40-foot octagonal lantern.

During the Second World War, it was used as a watchtower by the Home Guard and Royal Observer Corps.  It was originally a part of Hadlow Castle, an 18th century Strawberry-Hill style Gothic country house which was demolished after WWII.

Originally built in 1840 by architect George Ledwell Taylor, part of a grand castle in the Romantic Gothic style, built for industrlalist Walter Barton May. During the Second World War, it was used as a watchtower by the Home Guard and Royal Observer Corps.

The castle was demolished after WWII for building materials: only the tower and some of the gardens were spared. Bernard Hailstone RP, a renowned portrait painter (of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Sir Winston Chirchill amongst others), purchased the Tower and the remaining courtyard buildings, ultimately saving them.

Converted into a residence in the 70s, the tower fell into disuse and disrepair. It was fully restored in 2013 after receiving £4.5 million in grants from the National Heritage Lottery Fund and English Heritage.

There’s a life connecting the first 4 floors, or you can climb one of the two turret staircases ascending the tower. A grand master suite on the 4th floor boasts a walk-in closet, private bath, and direct access to the terraces.

Offering 3500 sq ft of living space inside the tower, the living amenities are spread across 5 floors, with a drawing room, dining room, and breakfast/kitchen room, as well as a hall on the ground floor.

It is listed after a brief stint as a tourist attraction, and even a listing on the swingers website Club Aphrodite for some 'Gothic castle folly'. ("Enjoy threesomes, foursomes and moresomes in the intriguing candlelit rooms created for the fulfilment of the eccentric, original owner's medieval, baronic fantasies.")

The tower has a half acre of private gardens with parking, and is set on communal castle estate grounds with a croquet lawn and an ornamental lake.
