For Sale: Ellen Degeneres' Villa Listed for $45 Million
TV talk show host Ellen DeGeneres and her wife actor Portia de Rossi are avid house-flippers and have bought, fixed-up and sold several homes together. Their California Villa has recently hit the market for $45 million. Set in the suburb of Montecito in Santa Barbara, the region is known as the “American Riviera” with sweeping views of rugged California coastline.
The charming estate is called “The Villa” and overlooks the Pacific Ocean.
Originally a two-bedroom home, the 10,500 sq ft estate was redesigned in 1930 by celebrated architect David Wallace. Inspired after living in Italy, Wallace created a romantic estate in the classical style of a 17th-century Italian villa in the hills of Montecito.
The details of the property are an homage to Old World romance and Tuscan charm, with a barrel-tiled roof, terra cotta surfaces, wide wood flooring planks and rustic exposed ceiling beams. The 16.88-acre grounds boast an alfresco dining area and an expansive garden of olive and eucalyptus trees that set the mood for la dolce vita. Beside the Roman-style pool and lush greenery stands a Roman column dating from 200 BC.
The interior is spacious and inviting with exposed brick walls and expansive windows and glass doors provide natural lighting throughout the property.
The Villa has six restful bedrooms, six baths, nine fireplaces, a media room, multiple libraries, a regal living room, a formal dining room, a modern kitchen with marble-wrapped surfaces and stainless-steel appliances, a few relaxing stone terraces to take in the view of the exquisite landscaping.
Since their purchase in 2012, DeGeneres and de Rossi have added to the property with the purchase of two adjacent properties and the addition of a tennis court, lap swimming pool, and a modern entertainment pavilion. Known as the "Jordan Hall," this extra area has a large living space with a fireplace, bar, and pool table, as well as an extra kitchen overlooking the pool and lawn. There is plenty of outdoor dining space, including a large dining terrace with a outdoor pizza oven.
“It feels ancient, like it’s been there forever. Like that hill was never without the house. This is a home that honors nature, and I love that," DeGeneres said.
