Porto San Giorgio is on the Adriatic coast of central Italy, in the Marche region south of Ancona. It began as the port for Fermo, the historic hill town inland, and developed into a seaside resort in the 19th century. It remains a summer destination, with sandy beaches, a promenade, restaurants and a harbour.
The villa was built in the second half of the 19th century by a physician who planned to use it as a nursing home. That plan was never carried out. After his death, his daughter turned the property into a family holiday residence, and it remained in the family for generations.
