A Baroque Palace in Portugal, Owned by One Family for 250 Years, is On the Market
On the market with Clark Baldwin. A Baroque palace in Portugal’s Bairrada region is listed with Clark Baldwin for €8,025,900. According to the agency, the sale includes the furnished house, its artwork, library and family china, along with stables, a riding arena and former carriage quarters. The estate covers approximately 89 acres (36 hectares), with 53,067 ft² (4,930 m²) of construction across the palace and other buildings.
The estate has remained in the same family for more than 250 years, and the family was still gathering here this summer. On August 15, 2026, Fernando Afonso de Andrade Santos e Pereira de Figueiredo, the 6th Marquess of Graciosa, married Maria do Rosário de Noronha e Corte-Real da Cunha Coutinho in the palace chapel. Guests, including members of Portugal’s former royal family, then moved into the gardens for the reception.
The façade of Paço da Graciosa has something of the scale and theatre of the great Baroque villas of Sicily. It is arranged around a broad stone staircase that divides into two flights leading to the main entrance. Above it, the family coat of arms sits over the central window, while pilasters and stone finials mark the façade.
Inside are a grand hall, reception rooms and the chapel, which is connected to the main building by an arch. According to the listing, the rooms retain original floors, decorative ceilings and period furnishings. The included books, artwork and china make the contents a significant part of the offering.
The present palace was built in the last third of the 18th century and is attributed to José de Melo Sampaio Pereira de Figueiredo, an ancestor of the family. The title of Marquess of Graciosa came later. In about 1896, the house gained a Neo-Manueline addition incorporating architectural pieces brought from demolished buildings in Coimbra, including Romanesque capitals from the former Church of São Cristóvão.
The stables, riding arena and former carriage quarters reflect a longstanding family interest in horses. The family also established the Coudelaria Marquês da Graciosa, a Lusitano horse stud associated with its Toula estate elsewhere in Portugal.
Paço da Graciosa stands near Anadia, between Aveiro and Coimbra, in the Bairrada wine region. Anadia is approximately 59 miles (95 km) from Porto and 152 miles (245 km) from Lisbon. The surrounding area is known for Baga wines, sparkling wine and the nearby thermal towns of Curia and Luso.
