They say they don’t build estates like this anymore. But on Long Island’s Gold Coast, developer John C. Kean still does.

Set within the guard-gated Spring Hill enclave in Old Westbury, New York, this 25,000-square-foot (2,323 m²) natural stone mansion was commissioned by investors Richard and Victoria Zecher, who purchased the nearly 6.81-acre (2.76-hectare) property in 2009 and spent several years developing what would become a sprawling private estate designed around recreation, entertaining, and family life.

Completed in 2014, the residence reflects the kind of large-scale custom home long associated with the North Shore of Long Island. According to public reporting, the Zechers initially planned to renovate their previous residence before ultimately deciding to build from the ground up—transforming a modest kitchen upgrade into a multi-year project that resulted in a four-level estate built to accommodate everything from family gatherings to private athletic facilities.

The home was built by Kean Development, a firm known for constructing large private estates across New York, the Hamptons, and Palm Beach, with many of its projects located in Long Island’s historic Gold Coast communities.

Clad in hand-cut natural stone and set behind manicured lawns, the house carries the scale and presence associated with the grand estates that once defined Long Island’s Gold Coast. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries—the period often referred to as America’s Gilded Age—wealthy industrial families developed expansive country estates across Long Island’s Gold Coast.

Many of those residences drew inspiration from European architectural styles, including French château, Georgian, and neoclassical designs. Contemporary estates in the area often reference those precedents through elements such as natural stone façades, symmetrical layouts, grand staircases, ornate millwork, and formal entertaining rooms—features that continue to evoke the aesthetic of the region’s historic estate era.

Inside, the residence includes seven bedrooms and thirteen bathrooms, with a sequence of formal and informal living spaces arranged for both entertaining and everyday family use.

The main level centers around expansive entertaining rooms and a large chef’s kitchen equipped with professional-grade appliances. Sliding panel doors open to a heated loggia with an outdoor kitchen and walk-in refrigerator, allowing the entertaining spaces to extend seamlessly outdoors during warmer months.

Much of the home’s most distinctive programming unfolds below the primary living areas. A two-level entertainment complex includes a bowling alley, billiards room, arcade, sports bar, temperature-controlled wine cellar, and a 12-seat movie theater with a built-in snack bar.

Athletics and wellness also play a central role in the design. The property features an indoor basketball court, golf simulator, gym, and a spa suite with a massage room, sauna, and steam room, along with a large indoor swimming pool.

Outdoors, the landscaped grounds continue the recreational focus. The estate includes an outdoor pool, tennis pavilion, and a private par-three golf hole, creating a setting designed as much for leisure as for entertaining.

Located approximately 25 miles from Manhattan, Old Westbury remains one of the most established residential enclaves on Long Island’s North Shore. The village is historically associated with the estate-era homes of families such as the Phipps and Vanderbilt, and large private properties continue to define the area’s residential landscape.

Within that context, the Spring Hill residence represents a contemporary interpretation of the Gold Coast tradition: a large custom-built estate set on expansive grounds and designed around the kind of private lifestyle amenities rarely found within a single home.

Now, with their children grown, the Zechers have decided to sell the property as they downsize—bringing one of the most amenity-rich private estates in the region to market.
