Restored Historic Castle in Southwest France—With Royal Ties

Designated as a historic monument, the Chateau de Montbrun is nestled within a stunning 400-acre estate in southwest France, located in the Perigord Limousin national park and on the Route ‘Richard Coeur de Lion’.

Steeped in local history, the castle was built in 1179 on the orders of King Henry II of England.

According to legend, King Richard the Lionheart was brought to Chateau Montbrun after being fatally wounded at the siege of Chalus on his return from the Crusades, and is rumored to have died there (the grounds are a burial place for his intestines).

The historic castle has hosted many notables throughout history, from Madame Pompadour to President de Gaulle, and it’s said that Brad Pitt wanted to buy the castle at one point, before settling on Chateau Miraval in Provence.

Chateau Montbrun has been beautifully restored to its full glory, following a meticulous, 10-year project with hundreds of master craftsmen employed.

The French chateau offers 35,000 sq ft of living space divided amongst four towers that surround the courtyard and features modern conveniences like underfloor central heating, up-to-date electrics, internet and telecoms technology, as well as modern bathroom facilities.

There are 15 ensuite bedrooms, some of which are accessible by elevator in the seven-storey Grand Jacques Tower—the oldest surviving part of the fortress.

The massive master suite comes with a walk-in closest, jacuzzi, sauna, private dining room, and access to a rooftop terrace with incredible views over the estate.

The grand residence has several reception rooms, including a 200-seater Great Hall, two-storey library, three kitchens, and even a cinema in the vaulted tower.

In addition to the main castle, the estate comes with several farm cottages and its own tavern with a full license.

Surrounded by ancient woodland, meadows, and lakes, the beautifully restored medieval castle is a time capsule waiting to be experienced and presents a wealth of opportunity for boutique tourism in the historic heart of France.
