The aristocrat and renowned adventurer first came to Mallorca in the summer of 1867 and the 20-year old Archduke fell under the spell of the immense natural beauty of the island, considered to be the crown jewel of the Balearic Islands in Spain.
He would spend almost 30 years buying up land between Valldemossa and Deià to preserve the land, and eventually his estate included the 16 km of coastline between the two villages which he dedicated to cultivating vegetables and orchards.
The Archduke is also responsible for carving out the hiking trails and viewpoints on this stretch of Mallorca’s north-west coast.
Famous properties on his vast estate included Miramar, a historic Franciscan monastery in Valldemossa, Son Marroig in Deià, now a museum open to the public, and S’Estaca, Michael Douglas’ iconic Moorish-style estate, also nearby.
Renowned as a champion for Mallorca's wildlife before the notion of conservation was in vogue, he spent 22 years writing a 9-volume work titled ‘Die Balearen, a well-documented encyclopaedia on the Balearic Islands featuring his hand-drawn illustrations.
