Campus Manor House and Estate For Sale

On the market with Knight Frank, the sale of the institution includes Yarnton Manor and its portfolio of various education and accommodation facilities, offering over 35,000 square feet of interior space.

Francis_York_18.jpg

Yarnton Manor is the principal house of the village of Yarnton, located midway between the University city of Oxford and Woodstock, famous for Blenheim Palace

Listed for sale as an institution, the estate includes the principal village house and a portfolio of various education and accommodation facilities, including a number of detached cottages, and a Grade II listed former vicarage, for a total of over 35,000 square feet of accommodation.

The 29.5 acre estate comes with a dedicated Croquet Lawn, orchards, paddocks, and 26 acres of woodland. The gardens are Grade II listed as well. The sunken and walled gardens, a Victorian sundial, and an Old Tennis Lawn provide an idyllic backdrop to garden games and outdoor relaxation.

The Grade II* listed Jacobean manor house was built in 1611 by the wealthy Spencer family, and features original flagstone floors, intricate carved timber detailing and doors, elaborately panelled rooms, and fine plastered ceilings. Not long after it was built, the estate fell into a ruinous state and was neglected for over 200 years.

It wasn’t until the late 19th century that the residence was restored and the gardens extended by the Oxford-based Gothic Revival architect, Thomas Garner, commissioned by Henry Robert Franklin. As the house had been untouched for over two centuries, Garner was able to preserve much of the original period details, including the Jacobean-style carved staircase.

In the early 20th century, Yarnton Manor changed hands several times, and was purchased by a prominent Oxford scholar. Used as a manor house campus for decades, the estate provides a memorable setting for private and corporate events.

Historic Magna Carta Island For Sale

On the market with U.K. Sotheby’s, the island is believed to be the setting where King John met with rebellious barons and signed the Magna Carta in 1215, considered one of the most important documents in history and an important symbol of liberty.

Francis_York_Magna_Carta17.jpg

The island is believed to be the setting where King John met with rebellious barons and signed the Magna Carta in 1215, considered one of the most important documents in history and an important symbol of liberty.

The charter is considered foundational for modern democracy. A piece of the original Magna Carta sold at a Sotheby’s auction for $21.3M.

In 1974, Queen Elizabeth II visited and commemorated the island by planting a tree.

Although the exact place where the charter was signed is debated among historians, a stone in the Charter Room of the Grade II-listed house commemorates the Magna Carta. The walls of the Charter Room are hung with the crests of King John and the 25 barons elected to keep the charter safe—including the owner of the island, Richard de Montfichet.

The area is rich with royal history: a 2000 year old yew tree on his property is said to be the site where Henry VIII held clandestine meetings with Anne Boleyn in the 1530s.

The house was built in 1834 by George Simon Harcourt, Esq Lord of the Manor and the Sheriff of the County.

The 19th century house requires some restoration (subject to the appropriate permits) and features charming period details, with 7 bedrooms, a lovely sunroom, and an impressive paneled dining room.

There’s a pool and a neighbouring cottage, and a small bridge that connects the island to main roads.

The riverside property offers 1279 feet of frontage directly on the Thames river, and is located just 10 minutes from Windsor Castle, and 5 minutes to Heathrow airport.

This Striking Elizabethan Country House Could Be Yours for £2M

The Grade II-listed Wilby Hall “has a real aura that is hard to find,” says listing agent Ben Rivett of Savills.

Francis York

This striking Elizabethan country house could be yours for £2M. Wilby Hall dates back to the 16th century and features much of its original architectural detail, built of mellow red brick with crow stepped gables and mullioned-and-transomed windows.

The Grade II-listed property is believed to have been built by Sir Thomas Lovell, an English soldier and administrator, who went on to be the speaker of the House of Commons and Chancellor of the Exchequer. Other famous occupants include Robert Wilton, who was a friend of Oliver Cromwell, who likely stayed at Wilby Hall while visiting his friend.

Wilby Hall is approached via a tree-lined drive, and the property comes with several outbuildings, including a chicken run, stables, a hayloft and a barn, which could be converted.

The former dairy building has been converted into a spacious 1-bedroom cottage and studio. A swimming pool with a terrace runs the length of the south-facing wall of the outbuildings.

Set in the heart of a lush 12 acre mature park, the country estate comes with a charming walled garden with a gravel path leading to the wrought-iron gate. Set against the backdrop of Wilby Hall, the gardenscape features a small pond, accentuated by yew topiaries, box and yew hedging.

The interiors have been carefully preserved throughout its history, and the residence features period details throughout. Wilby Hall offers 7 bedrooms and several formal rooms, each offering views of the gardens and grounds.
