Spectacular 16th Century Castle Near Milan

Castello di Montalto Pavese stands at the heart of 500 acres of land and offers panoramic views over the Lombardy countryside.

Built in 1593 on the ruins of an old tower (still visible today), Castello di Montalto Pavese stands at the heart of 500 acres of land and offers panoramic views over the Lombardy countryside.

The magnificent grounds contain private parkland, woodland and vineyards to be developed. The driveway to the castle is a 3km private road through woodland and fields, revealing the castello dramatically positioned atop a hill, surrounded by English and Italian-style formal gardens.

The castle comes with a chapel, a lemonaia (lemon nursery) and several workers' buildings and additional structures to be restored. The stables come with three antique carriages, complete with all its trappings.

Built in a U-shape, with a central structure flanked at towers at each end, the iconic residence is known locally as the "Queen of Oltrepò Pavese'' due to its dominant hilltop position overlooking the commune of Casteggio.

The 70,000 square foot castle has been beautifully restored and maintained over the years, featuring frescoed ceilings, magnificent reception rooms, and 30 ensuite bedrooms.

The castle bears the family crest of the Becredi family, who originally owned the property in the Middle Ages until the fiefdom was given to Pavia in 1164.

Later owned by the Visconti family, in 1406 the castle passed to the Beccaria family. In 1474, it was given to Federico Strozzi by the Duke of Milan, who raised the land status of Monalto to a Count that same year.

Strozzi's descendants would sell the property in 1617 to the Taverna family, who in turn sold the property to Luigi Belcredi in 1658, returning the castle after many centuries to its original owners.

In 1680, the Count was elevated to the rank of Marquis. It was the Marquis Giuseppe Belcredi who became known for staging theatrical performances at the Castello, attracting enlightenment luminaries like Volta.

In 1900, the property was purchased by the Bauldin family who renovated it in the 18th century style and converted it to a private residence.

The property is awaiting its next chapter to reclaim its status as a cultural destination, with the iconic estate just outside Milan well suited to become a boutique hotel or luxury commercial enterprise.

Rumors are circulating that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be looking to sell their Montecito mansion in an off-market deal.

Whether the rumors are true or not, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to feature this stunning property.

The Montecito mansion reportedly sold to the famous couple for $14.65M back in 2020 after being originally listed for $34M.

Located in Santa Barbara county, Montecito is one of the most sought-after enclaves in California with a reputation for both the privacy of its community and the high-profile status of many of its residents, including Oprah Winfrey, Gwenyth Paltrow, and Ellen Degeneres.

It's little wonder the couple chose this coastal corner of California (90 miles from LA) to call home when they relocated to the US after stepping down from their royal duties in early 2020.

The luxurious abode is exactly what you would expect of royalty: carved out of hand-cut Santa Barbara stone and covered with climbing ivy, the mansion is nestled in a lush estate with soaring Italian cypress trees, century old olive trees, tiered rose gardens and lavender shrubs.

The residence spans 14,500 square feet with 9 bedrooms and 16 bathrooms, an expansive living room with wrap-around bookshelves and a monumental fireplace, and luxury amenities like a home spa, screening room, and a wine cellar.

The estate comes with a swimming pool, tennis court, a private playground and children’s cottage, and a tea house set along the property’s private pond.

Francis Ford Coppola used this Neo-gothic, 19th century castle as a film location for the third instalment of the Godfather franchise, and the property’s buyer will own a piece of Hollywood history.

Built in 1800 for the noble Pennisi family of Floristella, the opulent castle is located in the coastal city of Acireale, just north of Catania in Sicily, Italy.

Built to house an extensive art collection, Baron Pennisi (his sculptural marble bust can be found at the front of the castle) hired the Palermo architect Giuseppe Matricolo to construct the eclectic mansion, comprising three two-storey residences and two two towers with Moorish-style battlements.

Inside, a striking three-arched portico crowns the monumental staircase, and ornate detailing, seen in coffered ceilings and ogival arches.

Its cathedral-like spaces are embellished with geometric patterns in gold and blue, accented by Byzantine-style furniture and paintings by Paul Pennisi.

Of architectural note on its own, the striking chapel features a starry-night ceiling and frescoes by the Italian painter Giuseppe Sciuti.

In its entirety, the castle has 22 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, a library, an artist studio, and a wine cellar.

The 43,000 square foot property also features a unique positioning in the 2.1-acre park, built at a 50 degree angle to best admire its beauty.

The property has an enduring legacy beyond its Hollywood ties, having survived British bombings during WWII and the famous 1908 earthquake.
