Timeless Estate Home to Prohibition Bootleggers, Vanderbilts, and Rockstars

The Lindens was built in 1910 for Max Fleischmann, heir to the Fleischmann's Yeast fortune. One of the largest opponents of the Prohibition, the renowned bootlegger is said to have inspired F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Gatsby character.

Just 25 miles from Manhattan, The Lindens offers a timeless appeal, set in 5.8 acres of grounds overlooking Manhasset Bay on Long Island Sound with 187 feet of sandy beachfront.

The New York estate comes with a swimming pool, cabana, tennis court, and a 3-bedroom cottage above the 4-car garage.

The 13 bed, 8.5 bath home offers 9800 sq ft of living space featuring lovely period details throughout.

Located in Sands Point, NY, The Lindens, also known as the Julius Fleischmann estate, was built in 1910, designed by American architect Augustus N. Allen with a sprawling stable complex designed by James W. O'Connor.

It was built for Max Fleischmann, who sold it to his brother, Julius. Their sister, Bettie Fleischmann Holmes, lived nearby at 'The Chimneys' estate.

They were the children of Charles Fleischmann, president of Fleischmann's Yeast, which at the turn of the 20th century was the world’s largest producer of yeast and second largest producer of vinegar.

The alcohol byproduct of yeast production was used to create gin, which made up a large part of their income.

The Fleischmann heirs were some of the largest opponents of the Prohibition and continued to make alcohol illegally, as well as setting up a speakeasy at The Chimneys.

The famous bootleggers used their large fortune to deal with the various charges against them, and it’s said that F. Scott Fitzgerald drew inspiration for Gatsby’s character from Max Fleischmann.

After Julius’ death in 1925, a large portion of the estate was sold off and became the Sands Point Golf Club.

In 1938 the estate was purchased by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, Jr. for his first wife, Manuela. It was an ideal property, located next door to the estate of his brother George, and his mother’s Cedar Knoll, although Vanderbilt eventually sold his estate in 1945, the same year his brother sold his neighbouring estate.

After the Vanderbilts, the elusive owner preferred to lease the property in the 1970s and 80s to rock icons like Edgar Winter and later the former Rolling Stones guitarist, Mick Taylor.
